Despite a life-long passion for art, I did not start painting seriously until the early 1990s. For three years, I studied watercolor painting, then focused on drawing and pastels, taking classes at the Maryland College of Art and Design and the Studio School in Washington, D.C. In the late 1990’s, I took my first oil painting classes and fell in love. Although I now also paint with acrylics, oils are still my favorite medium.
My subject matter is widely varied. I love to paint landscapes en plein air, but I also enjoy painting still lifes and people. I believe that my love of color and light and my tendency to work with vigorous brush strokes are common elements in all of my paintings. The more I paint, the more I realize that each painting is an opportunity to learn something new and grow as a painter. I look forward to a lifetime of learning.
I am a member of The Alexandria Art League in Alexandria, Virginia, and the Friends of the Yellow Barn Studio based in Glen Echo Park, Glen Echo, Maryland. I am also a member of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters' Association (MAPAPA). My work is carried by The Art Loft in Mayville, New York.
My work has been juried into numerous shows at The Art League, among others. I have held four solo exhibits including a solo landscape show in February and March of 2009 at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center in Frederick, Maryland. One of my paintings, entitled “If Music Be The Food Of Love I”, was selected to be on the December 2007 cover of Applause, the magazine provided to patrons of The Music Center at Strathmore in Rockville, Maryland. In October 2010, I was Artist-in-Residence at the Stone Tower in Glen Echo Park. I also sell work directly to individuals and do paintings on commission, including portraits and HomePortraits, paintings of people’s homes.
